Before & After Office

In a few short months - January, 2006 - I will be celebrating 10 years in business. My office is in my home, downstairs, in what use to be a bedroom.

When I first started my business I wanted "pretty" furniture and everything just right, as most people do. Yet my logical mind told me to work with what I had, be patient, wait, and one day I could have what ever I wanted, when the time was right.

My office has gone through many transformations in the past ten years: from a used desk here, arranging and moving things here and there, adding another desk, more equipment, and of course more books.

When I first moved into my office the carpet was a dark brown and the wallpaper on one wall and around the closet was dark and I, nor my business, seemed to be going anywhere. Not knowing a lot about feng shui I thought why not get some advice and give it a try so I called in a feng shui master, Rev. Rosemary, who politely told me that I was too grounded by the Earth colors of brown and I needed some Water in my office to flow out and some Wood to grow and do business. The carpet and wallpaper had to go! And go they did, which I replaced with a blue carpet, Water, and hung an oriental garden, Wood, wall mural over the old wallpaper. And miraculously business started to flow in...it seemed I was hardly in my office any more, which was good financially.

I became a believer in feng shui and many of my organizing clients started asking me about it so I heard the calling to become a feng shui practitioner in 2002.

As my business grew, my office started to 'explode' with more equipment, plus my husband also needed a place to work for when he was on call. I agreed to share my office with him and took a door, added some folding legs and made a very long and wide desk. The only place to put this 'desk' was almost right in the center of the office.

We drilled holes in the door for all the computer wires to go through and I draped the front of the desk with cloth to hide the wires. I put my seat against the wall as I did not want my back to the door. (View from office door):

The closet became my 'bookcase'

Now this worked for awhile; however I had not applied many feng shui techniques. And one day I felt like "I was backed up against a wall." Well I was!

It's been said that many things people write about or teach are lessons they also need to learn, experience or go through so I decided to teach a class on feng shuiing your office and apply the lessons and assignments to my own office because I knew feng shui worked and my office could use much improvement. And after almost 10 years of changes I decided the time was right for me to make the office I dreamt about when I first started my business. Funny through, I no longer wanted or needed the big cherry wood desk and high end furniture! I just wanted to be connected to my place and my place connected to me.

Using my professional training (I became a certified feng shui practitioner through the Feng Shui Institute of America ), my own advice, lessons and assignments from the course I taught in January, 2005, Feng Shui Your Office for More Clients and Prosperity, and after nine months of labor my office was finally completed. I felt like I'd given birth and I have a more organized, productive and sensorial space in which to work and grow. I am more connected to this space and it to me. I really enjoy spending time here.

You might be wondering why it took so long, nine months is a long time and generally 'overhalling' and feng shuiing a room shouldn't take that long so let me explain why it took me nine months to complete.

First I wanted to remove the closet that was my 'bookcase' to open up the room more and gain some more space. So I 'employed' my husband for this task. My husband is not much of a handy man nor does he like to do this kind of work yet he agreed to help. So we (he) had to rip out the closet framing, not an easy task. This took several months for he would only work on it when he was "in the mood."

On graph paper I drew out the shape and measurement of the room and where I wanted things placed and measured everything I was keeping and measured for items I needed to purchase, such as desks.

In the meantime I had found two desks, just the right size to work on and fit nicely in my office, at Target that matched my console that my printers sat on so out the door went the 'door desk'. My 'door desk' I temporarily put up in the rec room and stored all my books on...boy did I miss my books! My office felt dead without my books. All their energies were gone!

I placed the two desks back to back near the window to be closer to nature and to better enjoy the birds at their feeders right outside my window. Again I chose my seat to be facing the door, yet now I have more space behind me and I don't feel like I'm being backed up against a wall. Applying the Pyramid Feng Shui Ba-Gua these areas to the right of my entrance are known as the Relationship Gua (far left), Descendants Gua (middle) and Compassion Gua (far right).

Outside the window I have a bird feeder, a hummingbird feeder and a multi colored glass wind chime.

This is where I sit. I have everything around me that I need and within reach when working at my desk. My main computer is directly in front of my seat and laptop is to my right, with main printer I use. To my left on the desk are two phones, one is there for a back up since I talk so much on the phone and my batteries tend to run out. I installed a small shelf to my left in which my fax machine and scanner sit on, along with an incense burner and a small Zen writing board.

On the window sill I have an angel, which my "mom" gave me, a ladybug lady figurine, which my dear friend Sharron gave me, a couple of four leaf clovers that my husband gave me and a picture of my husband and me the day we married. These items watch over me and bring me joy and memories when I look out the window.

I needed and wanted new blinds for my three windows. My old blinds were very old and didn't open properly, so I rarely opened them....not good feng shui. The blinds I had were plastic verticals. So I had Next Day Blinds come by (Next Day was a month later for installation... a crazy story which I'll save for another time).

New Blinds
Bamboo Shades for smaller windows

Honeycomb Shade for larger window

Okay so the desks and equipment are in place, new shades and blinds installed and now I needed to get some bookcases and finish off the wall where the closet had been.

After getting estimates for customized bookcases I finally found what I was looking for, again through Target, that matched my desks and console. I brought five of them and got free shipping also!

I can not tell you how good it felt to finally have all my books back in my office. The energy of my office completely changed and felt alive again! This is the wall seen when you enter my office. Applying the Pyramid Feng Shui Ba-Gua these areas directly across from my entrance are known as the Empowerment Gua (far left), Future Gua (middle), and Relationship Gua (far right).

I organized and arranged my books in order of importance to me: My feng shui books are directly behind me, with my organizing books next to them. Both categories can be easily reached without getting out of my chair. Then spiritual, self-help, Internet marketing, business and writing books on down the wall.

I also hung all my certificates of membership, recognition and diplomas above the bookcases, along with a small mirror my daughter gave me, which I can see myself in when entering the office. I've placed pictures of friends, family and one of myself on the shelves also, along with a few icons of lady butterflies and fairies that bring me much joy and great memories.

My books and certificates of membership, recognition and diplomas were place behind me with the intention that these are my 'support systems'. My books support me in research and learning. My membership certificates give me the support of knowing I can reach out to others in those organizations if needed and them to me.

Now I was still dealing with the completion of the old closet wall. I chose a butterscotch paneling that helps to bring light into the room. After measuring, incorrectly, two trips to Lowe's, the paneling was finally up yet I couldn't get my husband to commit to putting up the trim molding. Finally, my daughter brought over a carpenter and for $40 he installed the trim molding.

When my dearest friends, Jo (my "sister") and John from Fl. came to visit, John added the finishing touches of a mirror, which reflects and brings the outdoors in (opposite the bigger window) and hung my plaque of a newspaper I was featured in. I still have a couple more plaques to hang on this wall. Applying the Pyramid Feng Shui Ba-Gua these areas to the left of my entrance are known as the Wisdom Gua (far left), Community Gua (middle) and Empowerment Gua (far right).

To the left of the couch I have a small round grass table with a Buddha statue and a Peace Lily plant, which are known to eat such toxins as ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde and xylene. Peace Lilies are also known to help cut through or absorb EMF's generated by computers and televisions. Applying the Pyramid Feng Shui Ba-Gua this area is known as the Wisdom Gua (far left).

In front of the couch I have another round grass table that has two candles, one white, one red that are scented with two of my favorite scents, chi and vanilla. Applying the Pyramid Feng Shui Ba-Gua this area is located in the center of the room and is known as the Health Gua or PMS Gua, which stands for Physical, Mental and Spiritual Health. I have a meditation cushion of weaved grasses where I sit to meditate and read.

The couch I already had, which folds out into a bed. The little fuzzy rabbit, well I touched it at a store and fell in love with the texture. My pillows of the sun, moon, and planets are just me.

The couch is no longer sitting in the middle of the room where it lived while I was "under construction" and I can now move freely around my office!

Besides my view of nature, being seated next to the window, here is my view when facing forward sitting at my desk, my beautiful mural with a small half round console that has a table top fog water fountain mister ( I generally put peppermint oil in this when working. Peppermint is known to improve concentration), a lamp, a sculpture, Piper J, my dear friend Dianne made (I helped a little by creating his hat and sack. See her site at Hidden Hill Hollow) and a small Zen rock/sand garden:

The water seems to flow out the mural into the fountain.

Dianne and I went on a retreat at our friends farm in Mine Run, VA and Piper J was born. I had fun learning more about clay and sculpturing and months later Dianne gifted him to me. I've placed him where I can enjoy seeing him while I work and seeing him brings back the memories of fun and laughter of spending time with my friend Dianne.

My entrance door is to the right of this. I generally keep my door open, unless I'm consulting on the phone or doing a training session. On my door I have always hung cards, notes and favorite pictures from clients and loved ones. In the far left corner I have an indoor electrical chime that I turn on when needed.

You can see a small sample of a throw carpet, squares with Earth tones, for grounding of my couch sitting area.

As you can see I've surrounded myself with things I love, brought the outside in, items that bring me great memories, icons that feed my soul, spirit and work, smells and sounds that invoke calm, peace and energy when needed for different tasks I do. I started with an intention, took action, went through the processes one goes through to connect person/place for true harmony and balance in ones world. It's a journey. It's was a journey with ups, downs and continually change.

Feng Shui is about how you and your spaces are connected, invoking all your senses through sight, sound, smell, touch, taste, and movement, colors and shapes, getting rid of clutter, putting out the intention that you can do it, taking action and going through the changes and processes! It's a wonderful journey to bringing about harmony and balance to your world.

It's a wonderful feeling of connection ....
